“AMOTEKUN” Proliferation: A Beacon of Security in Western Nigeria

The situation with kidnappings, killings, and the destruction of farmlands by the violent herders had become increasingly rampant. The entire Western Region was on the brink of descending into chaos before the concept of Amotekun was envisioned and brought to fruition by the governors of the six Western states. Amotekun, the code name for The Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN), was inaugurated in June 2019 in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, with the primary objective of tackling and mitigating the insecurity plaguing the region.
This innovative initiative, Amotekun, demonstrated its effectiveness in a remarkably short span of time. Within a few months of its implementation, the pervasive insecurity that had been a major concern throughout the region began to recede, marking a significant turnaround in the security landscape.

Recently, I encountered a van resembling those Amotekuns on a visit to the United States. This sight evoked a sense of nostalgia, and I couldn’t help but wonder how the violent herders would react if they saw such a van, even far from their homeland. It brought to mind a verse from the Bible, Proverbs 9:10: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”
